The Institute for Human Rights at Åbo Akademi University
operates within the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and works in close cooperation with the Department of Law within the same Faculty. The main functions of the Institute pertain to research and education in the field of human rights. The Institute has a long experience in arranging human rights courses of high standard. Moreover, it is currently coordinating a Nordic School in Human Rights Research, for post-graduate students and doctoral candidates from the Nordic and Baltic countries. About: The Institute for Human Rights was founded in 1985 as an integrated unit of the Åbo Akademi University and its Department of Law. The activities of the Institute are financed partly through the University budget (Ministry of Education), partly through external funding on a project basis. Among the main sources of project funding are the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Finnish Ministry of Education, the Academy of Finland, the European Commission and the Council of Europe.
The aim of the Institute is to promote research, provide education and disseminate information relating to the protection of human rights. The Institute assists various outside institutions, including other universities, government authorities and mass media in human rights research, policy-making and dissemination of human rights information. The library of the Institute holds a large collection of human rights literature.
