… WIRE History:
- WIRE – Women’s Information was formed in 1984 by the combined efforts of many organisations such as the Women’s Electoral Lobby, Lifeline, the Victorian Police and the YWCA. Women had many questions concerning major life choices and their basic human rights and were seeking complex support and information to help find solutions. Twenty plus years on WIRE has evolved into a comprehensive information, support and referral service.
- WIRE has a multi-faceted role in the community, with a volunteer staff of around 100 women. In the 1990s WIRE – Women’s Information established online services, providing information through the Internet and email enquiries. WIRE’s Women’s Information Centre (WIC) commenced operation in December 1999, enabling women to access information at a central city location. Today, WIRE services include a phone support service, the walk-in centre, training, education, and this comprehensive, searchable website.
