About 2/2: … Poignantly, as the first channel of its kind anywhere in the world, the track that holds the honour of being the first to play on the ground-breaking station was ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ by The Buggles. It was a prophetic choice given MTV’s subsequent stratospheric ascendance as well as its immeasurable impact on youth culture across the globe.

The innovative station has defined an entire generation, nicknamed the ‘MTV Generation’, and been a major player in creating some of the world’s biggest superstars including Prince, Duran Duran, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and U2. But it’s not just about music. MTV has also influenced how young people all over the world dress, think, and talk. It’s given artists a forum for airing their political views and pushed society’s boundaries.

Now, the MTV phenomenon is in the Middle East. Launched in November 2007, MTV Arabia (MTVa) is owned by Dubai-based Arab Media Group, the biggest multimedia corporation in the UAE, in partnership with MTV International.
