The Barbara Lee Family Foundation supports progressive initiatives in two program areas: women in politics and the contemporary art. The Barbara Lee Family Foundation Women in Politics Program Area is dedicated to engaging women fully in the American democratic process and promoting their participation at all levels of government. The Barbara Lee Family Foundation Contemporary Art Program Area is dedicated to supporting the visual contemporary art in Boston and the exhibition and publication of work by contemporary women artists. About Barbara Lee, Boston/MA: … A former school teacher and social worker, Lee has committed herself to helping women gain and use political power as elected officials, activists, and voters. In her hometown of Boston, she is also known as a devoted advocate for the city’s cultural life, and her leadership is helping the Boston arts community continue to make history. Boston Magazine includes her among “The 100 People Who Run This Town,” and she is listed as one of the 50 most powerful people in Boston (Boston Magazine, May 2008). About the Foundation: The Barbara Lee Family Foundation, based in Cambridge, MA was established in 1999. It was founded by Barbara Lee to strategically advance two of her longstanding passions – women in politics and the contemporary art.

Over the past seven years, the Foundation has conceived, directed and provided funding for projects in these two areas. The Women in Politics Program Area strives to empower more women to become fully engaged in the political process. The Contemporary Art Program Area seeks to advance the visual contemporary art in Boston and the work of contemporary female artists throughout the country.
