Mission Statement: Many of the practical problems associated with human rights – from civil rights violations, to genocide, to international intervention – stem from fundamental disagreements about ethical philosophy. The Rights Philosophy Forum aims to nurture understanding of competing philosophies, and to encourage everyone involved in the human rights debate to continually refine, strengthen, and even overhaul their own arguments when necessary. At the same time, the RPF hopes to cultivate a sense of cooperation and tolerance in the discussion of human rights philosophy, and to promote a healthy, fruitful interchange of ideas between peoples and countries holding vastly different viewpoints.

DELTA stands for Development Education and Leadership Teams in Action. It is a collective training event to prompt action for social change. Its roots are in Freirean critical awareness, human relations training in group work, organizational development, social analysis and a conceptualization of transformation derived from liberation theology.

The program was originally developed for use in Kenya. It has spread thereafter to other neighboring countries in Africa thanks to mobile training teams. It has also been used in European countries. (full text).

Delta started in 1992 as a project of the Catholic Welfare Development (CWD). In 1995 it became independent from CWD. Delta has been empowering women in the urban and rural areas in the Western Cape. (full text).

About: The purpose of the Pugwash Conferences is to bring together, from around the world, influential scholars and public figures concerned with reducing the danger of armed conflict and seeking cooperative solutions for global problems. Meeting in private as individuals, rather than as representatives of governments or institutions, Pugwash participants exchange views and explore alternative approaches to arms control and tension reduction with a combination of candor, continuity, and flexibility seldom attained in official East-West and North-South discussions and negotiations. Yet, because of the stature of many of the Pugwash participants in their own countries (as, for example, science and arms-control advisers to governments, key figures in academies of science and universities, and former and future holders of high government office), insights from Pugwash discussions tend to penetrate quickly to the appropriate levels of official policy-making.

Advocacy Forum is a leading non-profit, non-governmental organization working to promote the rule of law and uphold international human rights standards in Nepal. We actively combat the culture of impunity that has thrived without scrutiny for decades by systematically documenting human rights abuses, formally building cases and monitoring detention centers and the information we collect is evidence for the necessary reform of the criminal justice and judiciary systems of Nepal.

In order not to fall victim to Nepal’s dysfunctional legal system ourselves, we regularly extend our findings into the international human rights realm in order to engage internationally recognized legal mechanisms. We work closely with Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, The International Commission of Jurists and the Asian Human Rights Commission. Recently, Advocacy Forum was an active contributor in the establishment of the Office of The High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal. With the help of these and other concerned agencies, Advocacy forum has put Nepal at the forefront for significant human rights attention.

Started in 2001, by just 6 lawyers, advocacy forum has since grown to have 4 regional offices and 8 district offices in Nepal, and a staff of 104, (41 of whom are lawyers). Despite threats to cease our investigations, Advocacy Forum has continually used the law resourcefully to promote justice … (full text).

The member organisations meet once a year for the General Assembly to define the World Coalition’s strategy and elect a Steering Committee. About: The Centre for Environment and Food Security (CEFS) was founded in April, 2001 by some eminent scholars, writers, environmentalists, scientists and activists like Prof. Ashis Nandy, Dr. Kamla Chowdhry, Dr. Pradipto Roy, Mr. Anupam Mishra, Prof. P. About ILGA: The International Lesbian and Gay Association is a world-wide network of national and local groups dedicated to achieving equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people everywhere.

This year’s Human Rights Day will mark the end of the United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education (1995-2004). As a recognition of all the excellent work that has been done during the Decade, HREA will launch the Global Human Rights Education Database.
This database includes:

• a Directory of Organisations involved in human rights education;
• a comprehensive listing of Human Rights Courses and Programmes offered worldwide;
• an extensive Annotated Bibliography of human rights education materials that have been produced during the UN Decade for Human Rights Education;
• a Global Directory of Human Rights Educators.

Most of the data contained in the Global Human Rights Education Database has been collected with your help over the past ten years through our Electronic Resource Centre (since 1998), contributions to the Global Human Rights Education listserv (since 1999), and as part of various editions of HREA’s Human Rights Education Resourcebook (first edition in 1997, second in 2000, third in 2003). The Global Directory of Human Rights Educators provides an additional resource for individuals, communities and organisations that are looking for assistance with their activities or want to exchange information. Through the directory one can identify trainers or curriculum developers, explore potential partnerships, etc.

We hope the Global Human Rights Education Database will become a valuable tool for those working in HRE. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have specific questions (technical or otherwise) about the Database; you can do so by e-mail.
