ORIGIN OF HURISA: The Human Rights Institute of South Africa (HURISA) has its roots in the Goldstone Commission of Inquiry. The Commission of Inquiry Regarding the Prevention of Public Violence and Intimidation (under the chairmanship of Justice Richard Goldstone) was appointed by former State President FW de Klerk on 24 October 1991, to inquire into the phenomenon of public violence and intimidation in the Republic of South Africa, the nature and causes thereof and what persons were involved therein. It also inquired into any steps that should be taken in order to prevent public violence and intimidation. The Commission made 47 recommendations to the State President … (full text Homepage).

About: … History: The AIDS Consortium was established in 1992 by Justice Edwin Cameron, today a Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal and other HIV/AIDS activists. Its objective was to promote a non-discriminatory response to HIV/AIDS based on people’s basic human rights as enshrined in the South African constitution. The Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF) was established in July 2000 by activists and organisations involved in two key anti-privatisation struggles: the struggle against iGoli 2002 in Johannesburg, and the struggle against Wits 2001 at Wits University. The APF has affiliates from the unions, communities, students and the left. Background: The Steve Biko Foundation is inspired by the development legacy of the man Bantu Steve Biko. Biko’s approach emphasized the importance of the connection between identity, agency and change. It focused on the inextricable link between the individual and society, between history and biography. Through this link the individual internalizes influences from their society that come to determine his or her role in the community. Under the direction of Jeffrey L. Edleson, Ph.D., the Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse was established in 1994 by the Minnesota State Legislature with a charge « to improve the quality of higher education related to violence. » During its first years, the Center’s initial and only project was the Violence Education Project. The project included a discipline-specific needs assessment about higher education, a web- based library of educational resources, a grant program to fund the development of new violence-related higher education curricula, higher education conferences, and worked to change continuing education and licensing requirements … (full text History).
