• Set up on the 24th of October, 1994 Charkha a voluntary, non-government organisation was born with the realisation that developmental issues pertaining to rural India were not receiving adequate coverage in mainline media.
• Through the use of various tools of communication, Charkha serves as a dynamic link between grassroots activists, rural India, NGOs, and the mainstream media. It is a Charkha priority that constructive and positive aspects of all developmental work are duly covered by both national and regional media. The WRC conducts investigations of labor conditions in factories around the world that produce apparel and other products that are sold in the U.S. and Canada. The WRC’s primary focus is the labor rights practices of factories producing apparel and other products bearing university logos on behalf of our university affiliates. The WRC investigates working conditions at these factories, issues detailed public reports, and works with factories, North American apparel companies, and workers and local organizations to correct problems and improve respect for worker rights. The WRC launches factory assessments in direct response to worker complaints and also initiates assessments on a proactive basis. On June 14th Elaine Uang and Cameron Sinclair met with the Mahiga Primary and Secondary School students and teachers to formally announce the ‘Net Positive’ court as the second recipient of Gamechangers funding. Both schools are located near the Aberdare mountain range and are suffering though an extended drought.
This multi-purpose court will collect enough drinkable rainwater to allow over 400 children to attend both schools. check out a slideshow of the event here. The school is also being supported by the Nobelity Project. (Homepage).
