About VS: THE GENESIS: Vidya Sagar (formerly known as The Spastics Society of India) is a voluntary organization based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The organization works with children and young adults with cerebral palsy and other neurological disabilities, their families and the communities they live in.
Started in 1985 by a mother with a child with disability, Vidya Sagar is known today for the quality and range of programs, it’s “professionalism with care”, the pro-active and positive spirit of its team of staff and children.
In 2005 Vidya Sagar received the” NATIONAL AWARD FOR THE WELFARE OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES.” awarded “in recognition of its outstanding performance in the field of Welfare of persons with disabilities”.
The 21 year old organization focuses on the holistic development and education of children and adults with special needs, on demystification of disability, empowering persons with special needs and their families with knowledge and skills, while strongly advocating on issues of inclusion. The organization believes in the right to equality of opportunity, an inclusive society where differences are celebrated, that disability is a development and a human rights issue.
LIFE SPAN APPROACH:
Vidya Sagar has pioneered parent training programs which are suited to Indian conditions and today at any given time through work reaches out to over 3,000 families who have children with special needs. Vidya Sagar’s services take the life span approach. New projects have evolved over the years to suit the diverse needs of a special population growing up. Three years ago Vidya Sagar took on work with mental health.
The Team of Director, senior management, special educators, social workers, therapists, speech and communication specialists, therapy aides assistant teachers, volunteers, young adults in the Disability Law Unit, administrative staff, support staff, and a Governing Body make the services possible.
