Long-term thinking for today’s world. The World Future Council is a new voice in the global political arena – one that draws on our shared human values to champion the rights of future generations, and works to ensure that humanity acts now for a sustainable future. Facing global challenges Despite having the means to tackle many of the problems we currently face, the existing global system of governance has so far seemed incapable of addressing them, often failing to adopt available solutions. The World Future Council will identify and promote successful policies, using existing networks to connect with over 25,000 parliamentarians, and more than 8,000 civil society organizations worldwide, arguing not for an ideology or a nation or a religion or a political party but for one thing only: our common future.

Newsletter / The WFC Community: Bringing about the kind of change we want to achieve means that we have to build movements. It means that we have to work in partnership with others, rather than working in parallel with them; and build on existing knowledge and expertise, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel. We are in the process of actively building the WFC community – contacting individuals and organisations to explore potential collaborations – and would encourage organisations that share our aims to contact us. We are also exploring ways of enabling people to interact with us but in the meantime, please sign up for our newsletter using the boxes in the right hand bar.
(Added Febr. 1, 2008):
The World Future Council was founded by the Swedish writer and activist Jakob von Uexkull in reaction to politics across the world being dominated by short-term, economic thinking. The idea for a global council was first aired on German radio in 1998. It hit a chord, with German TV immediately expressing an interest in broadcasting the Council’s sessions. In October 2004 the organisation was officially launched in London with funding from private donors in Germany, Switzerland, USA and the UK. (wikipedia).
My comment: The World Future Council is a positive example of what I mean by working together in Elites’ work versus people’s work.
