Founded in 1974, the Transnational Institute (TNI) is an international network of activist-scholars committed to critical analyses of the global problems of today and tomorrow, with a view to providing intellectual support to those movements concerned to steer the world in a democratic, equitable and environmentally sustainable direction. In the spirit of public scholarship, and aligned to no political party, TNI seeks to create and promote international co-operation in analysing and finding possible solutions to such global problems as militarism and conflict, poverty and marginalisation, social injustice and environmental degradation. TNI History: The Transnational Institute (TNI) was founded in 1974 as the international programme of the Washington DC-based Institute for Policy Studies. It subsequently became an independent worldwide fellowship of committed scholar-activists, based in Amsterdam.
Part of the TNI Archives (and also the papers of the TNI Washington) are kept at the IISG (International Institute of Social History) in Amsterdam and can be viewed after appointment only. The archive includes e.g. general correspondence 1973-1988; agenda, minutes and discussion papers concerning meetings of the Planning Board 1974-1987 and Fellows’ Meetings 1984-1988; correspondence of Eqbal Ahmed, founder of the TNI, 1973-1975; correspondence with and articles, progress reports and research papers from the fellows and associate fellows, among others Tariq Ali, Anthony Barnett, Susan George and Fred Halliday 1973-1988; documents concerning research proposals, projects, seminars and conferences 1974-1989; background information and other documentation on the studies 1973-1991.
