CIDA is Canada’s lead development agency. It has a mandate to reduce poverty and to contribute to a more secure, equitable, and prosperous world. CIDA works in partnership around the world to support sustainable development in developing countries and to offer humanitarian assistance in areas of need. Since the founding of the United Nations in October 1945 and of specialized agencies following World War II, Canada has been supporting the development efforts of partner countries and organizations around the world. It has a mandate to support sustainable development in developing countries in order to reduce poverty and to contribute to a more secure, equitable, and prosperous world.
The diversity and complexity of the world’s people and cultures calls for a variety of different approaches as Canada works to support the efforts of the developing world to improve its social and economic prospects.
On Canada’s behalf, these challenges are addressed primarily by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
