About /Copenhagen Climate Summit, December 7-9, 2009: On December 9, 2009, representatives of 192 nations will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark for a conference on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. That’s the formal title for what most of us think of as the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement that expires in 2012 and that badly needs a fair, ambitious, and binding update.
The key to success in Copenhagen will be continued strong leadership from Germany, France and the U.K. They must pull up European laggards such as Poland and Italy and get allies like Canada and Japan to stop blocking progress abroad and to commit to real action at home. The so-called +5 nations of Brazil, India, China, South Africa and Mexico are positively engaged, but will face heavy pressure to accept specific targets in containing their greenhouse gas emissions. Negotiators also fear that large oil producers such as Saudi Arabia and Russia will work against a strong new agreement. Finally, of course, there is the United States, a laggard under the previous administration but a country to which the whole world is now looking for leadership.
The populations of all these countries must demand that their leaders go to Copenhagen fully prepared to sign on to an ambitious, fair and binding agreement..
