Over the past 22 years it has developed into a dynamic civil society organisation with a history closely linked to the social and political changes experienced by South Africa during its transition to democracy. About 2/2: … SANGONeT’s ICT services and interventions are shaped by the challenge of strengthening the capacity of NGOs in finding long-term and sustainable solutions in response to Southern Africa’s development problems.
NGOs’ capacity for service delivery increasingly requires that attention be given to their ability to use, manage and implement as well as integrate ICTs into their activities. Although many South African NGOs are already active users of ICTs, much more needs to be done to build the capacity of the sector in this regard. SANGONeT’s activities centre around three interrelated programme areas:
- Civil Society Information Services
- ICT Services
- ICT Advocacy
NGO Pulse is SANGONeT’s NGO and development information portal. It is a one-stop Internet information resource for and about the NGO sector in South Africa and is a recognised and respected gateway to the development community.
NGO Pulse provides a media platform for development news, commentary and debate and promotes interaction and networking in the development sector. In addition to news content, the portal also provides NGO managers and workers with a dedicated source of information about NGO management and sustainability. This includes management and fundraising toolkits which cover a range of strategic, tactical and operational issues affecting NGOs in South Africa. SANGOTeCH supports NGOs by offering software at a greatly reduced cost and assisting them to make the most of their ICT purchases and infrastructure. We provide resources and advice around technology planning, ICT tips and tricks and other technology assistance required by NGOs in Southern Africa. While SANGOTeCH does charge administrative fees, NGOs that are part of the programme benefit from a discount of more than 90 percent on typical retail prices. The SANGOTeCH online technology donation and discount portal is a partnership between SANGONeT and TechSoup that links technology donations and the South African NGO sector and forms part of the ICT Services Programme. The Prodder NGO Directory is the most comprehensive online directory of NGOs and development organisations in South Africa. It includes information about organisations and institutions involved in development in South Africa and raises awareness about their work. It provides a reference point for donors and other stakeholders that want to engage with the NGO sector, and maps the scope and scale of NGO activities in the country. Prodder forms part of SANGONeTs work to support local and regional development processes through credible and comprehensive information resources delivered through the Civil Society Information Programme. Thetha: The SANGONeT ICT Discussion Forums assist Southern African civil society organisations (CSOs) to respond to challenges and opportunities presented in their day-to-day work by information communication technologies (ICTs).
The overall goal is to raise awareness and inform a wide range of national, regional and international stakeholders, including CSOs, about the ICT challenges and opportunities that face Southern Africa. Thetha builds their capacity to engage with these issues in an informed and strategic manner, and ultimately, informs local and regional ICT decision-making and development planning processes. Thetha is part of the ICT Advocacy Programme.
