Background 2/2: … Established in the year 1980, it has done revolutionary work, since its inception, in the field of Child Rights , Child Labour eradication, Women’s Empowerment and Environmental issues, in 200 villages in the vicinity of Kerwadi, in Palam and Gangakhed Talukas. In the last 5 years our area of work has grown from this small block to 5 districts in the state. Steps have already been taken to take our mission to the state level very soon.
Socio Economic Development Trust (SEDT) was established on 10 th May 1980 with the dream of providing a home to destitute children of the rural areas of Parbhani district. It began its work with a hostel and other institutional care facilities for orphans, or children from poor or broken families and this place was called ‘Swapnabhoomi’ or ‘Dreamland’.
As it came in close contact with the realities of these children, the SEDT team increasingly felt the need to work with the community. Thus, we began work in the neighbouring villages, with a view to build community contact and understand the local issues. Within a period of 3 years from the inception, we had initiated programmes like immunization, community health with a focus on women and awareness generation with a clear community development approach.
As we gained experience, we developed our own perspective on ‘Development’, and our programmes and strategies became more and more focused. We worked primarily with women, children, youth and farmers, building community structures, strengthening them and building their capacities. We believe that people shape their own future, and our own role is to act as facilitators for the empowerment of the people.
At this juncture, apart from our institution for destitute children, SEDT has on-going projects aimed at:
- Elimination of Child Labour.
- Providing Non Formal Education to children who have dropped out of school.
- Promoting Universalisation of Elementary Education (UEE) in over 360 villages intensively in the Parbhani district and in 4 other districts of the Marathwada region.
- Watershed development and water harvesting programmes in drought prone areas.
- Income Generation Programmes for women from economically backward groups.
Apart from these programmes, we are also members of and play a leading role in state level networks. We have been the co-ordinators of ‘Sarvat Aadhi Shikshan’ (Education First), a state level campaign stressing on primary education for every child, from its inception in 1997. SEDT’s founder member, Suryakant Kulkarni, is also the Secretary of ‘Maharashtra Gramin Vikas Sanstha Parishad’, a state level federation of voluntary agencies working for rural development. We also initiated and co-ordinated the earthquake relief co-ordination committee after the earthquake stuck in Latur in 1993. Earlier, we were the co-ordinators of the Marathwada Eco Group, a network of NGOs formed to fight the drought in Marathwada.
Many Indian and overseas funding organizations have aided us and we have developed lasting relations of trust and integrity with them. Government has been instrumental in furthering many of our projects, not only in monetary ways, but also by devising and implementing several pro-development schemes. Many individuals, from all strata of the society, have volunteered and offered help of all kinds and helped us in our mission. Last but the not the least, our staff has always been committed and has made tireless efforts to further our cause at all times.
