Fisheries, Bycatch: Alternative gear to reduce by-catch of sea birds and harbour porpoises in the Baltic Sea.

Gillnets are often regarded as selective fishing methods by fishermen. However, this only refers to size and species selectivity for fish. Large mesh bottom set gillnets (mainly used to catch cod and turbot) and semi driftnets (used to catch salmon in Polish fisheries) are responsible for major by-catch of sea-birds and marine mammals such as the harbor porpoise. Annually, in Baltic Sea gillnet fishery about 100.000 birds are taken unintentionally. For most areas, figures for harbor porpoise by-catch are not available. In the German part of the Baltic annual strandings have increased from ~20 to ~150, of which at least 50 % are by-caught (indicated by net marks, cuts, etc.). In Poland, the target of the Jastarnia Plan of a maximum of 2 by-caught animals in the distribution area of the inner Baltic population are exceeded.ch they may be sold nonetheless. This is yet another back door for the unfettered overexploitation of fish stocks!
