Shelternet is Canada’s first and only national online resource and support network for abused women and their children. Since its inception ten years ago, the organization has helped thousands of women across the countries who are victims of domestic violence. With all abuse, the abuser uses power over those they are abusing. The abuser is responsible for his or her behaviour.
We Help Abused Women
- Violence against women is a serious human rights violation that affects women worldwide. It has been estimated that one in four Canadian women will be assaulted in their lifetime (assaults where criminal charges are warranted). Growing evidence confirms that women are reaching out for help through the Internet from their workplaces, homes, public libraries and schools. Linking women to their local shelter is an essential part of a community-based response to violence against women.
Shelternet offers women, children, and youth:
- A state-of-the-art clickable map of Canada providing information on local shelters and helplines
- A printable Safety Plan addressing a variety of circumstances
- A « Just for Kids » section for children and youth who have witnessed violence, including a picture gallery of children’s drawings as an expression of their experiences
- Women’s stories, poetry, and comments from abused women
- Cultural and linguistic translation of the website into many languages
- Information on abuse, shelters, and what family, friends, and employers can do.
