What we do: Through our network and challenges programme Science for Humanity aims to bring together scientists, international development agencies, social enterprise and communities to design, develop and deliver innovative, real world, science based applications, which bring tangible benefit to people in the developing world.
Key elements of our work include:
- Identifying science based problems in developing countries through our relationships with international development agencies, government, foundations and others.
- Defining problems in association with community partners including social, cultural, environmental and resource needs as well as science needs.
- Communicating those problems to the Science for Humanity network in the form of challenges.
- Providing a tangible way for scientists from the full spectrum of basic and applied natural, physical, biological, engineering, social and human sciences to get involved in solving specific problems in the developing world through our challenges programmes.
- Supporting collaboration and innovation on potential solutions by bringing together scientists, community partners and social enterprise.
- Facilitating funding of challenge programmes and pilot projects.
- Reviewing all potential scientific solutions though our advisory board and ensuring that community partners who are ultimately responsible for the selection and implementation of a pilot programme are involved throughout the process.
- Developing through partnerships new sustainable models to support the design, development and delivery of innovative solutions that bring economic and as well as practical benefit to communities.
- Raising awareness of the role of science in development and the complexities of working in this area.
- Sharing our learnings to foster new ways of thinking about how science and technology can work in the interest of people in poverty.
