Global Conference: Build a new balance: The break-up of the global financial crisis is a major reality, but beside this we can talk about a “crises junction”, according to Daniel Cohn Bendit, in “Que faire”?

Financial crisis, whose end is unpredictable, The Global Conference might be its end. During the London G20 summit, on the April 2nd, 2009, the world’s powers proposed answers to the financial crisis. Still, the question is on the efficiency of these responses, since the world is oscillating between the tendency of changing the economical model and the incapacity of developing radical tools to build a global project.

Food crisis has not defined solutions, either.  The debates are swinging between the dominant position of the food industries and that of the NGOs and certain international agencies, in favor of reestablishing the regional cultures’ balance. The failure of the international trade negotiations delays / rebounds the problem of the equitable prices of the row materials coming from the poor countries. While the 21st century pretends to be representative for the highest technology, it is facing severe starvations, similar to the Middle Age.

Even though nowadays ecological crisis has already multiple tangible signs, the invisible ones could be even more severe. After thirty years of quasi deafness to the scientific experts’ and NGOs’ warnings the world’s leaders start to take action against this crisis, but the “counting down” has already begun, Albert Jacquard said. Ten years ago we were talking about 2050 as a junction of dangers. Now the outburst of phenomenon like climate warming, ice melting, water shortage in some regions, etc., makes 2030 a high risk year.

Finally, the moral crisis is the result of the above mentions three crises and moreover of our constant difficulties in changing our civilization / way of thinking.

For thirty years global communities have been warning on these risks, trying to find efficient solutions. Despite the usefulness of these attempts, they seem insufficient since they occurred at the moment when we could not adjust anymore the pressure of the economy on the environment. Furthermore, facing the general dysfunction of the natural system the applied mechanisms proved to be inefficient. The economic crisis is often presented as a decrease of the industrial activities, but it could also be an efficient way to reduce the CO2 emissions.

“Against the CO2 emissions but not in favor of sustainable development”… since the challenge of this concept, probably the only utopia of the beginning of the century, targets the well-being of humanity, within a more equitable economy and a more preserved environment.

After three successful meetings assembling the sustainable development actors, the Planetworkshops have took the initiative of being an active actor of this challenge, by stirring all stakeholders who can influence the necessary changes of our civilization.
