- … The non-profit international film project Peace One Day was launched in 1999 by British filmmaker Jeremy Gilley to document his efforts to establish the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed calendar date. As a result of these efforts the day was unanimously adopted by UN member states in 2001 as 21st September annually.
- Since that time Peace One Day has worked to inform the world’s people of the day’s existence, engaging all parties in the day’s observance in accordance with the United Nations Resolution (A Res/55/282).
- In 2006 Peace One Day launched the first ever UK POD Citizenship Resource Pack for Key Stages 3&4 (S1-S4 in Scotland) to accompany Jeremy Gilley’s first feature-length documentary, Peace One Day. The pack contained 14 lessons, exploring issues such as Conflict Resolution, Inter-cultural Cooperation, the United Nations and Anti-bullying.
- Early in 2007, Ecover (the manufacturers of ecologically sustainable cleaning products) came forward to sponsor a 2nd Edition of the Citizenship Resource Pack and enabled POD to provide the pack free to 92% of UK Secondary Schools. The 2nd Edition contained 17 active, student centred lesson plans, with new lessons on peace and non-violence in relation to Sport, the Environment and Music.
Peace one day education now:
- In 2007 Jeremy was joined by Jude Law in Afghanistan in an attempt to spearhead a massive vaccination against polio on Peace Day to prove that the Day could work, the Day could save lives.
- It worked; in 2007 Peace One Day was instrumental in helping to secure the conditions in which humanitarian activity could be carried out. As a result, 1.4 million children were vaccinated against polio. There were life-saving initiatives in 14 countries and over 80 activities in Afghanistan alone. In addition, over 100 million people (source UN) were active on Peace Day, in 192 countries. Peace Day 2008 saw the polio vaccination figure in Afghanistan rise by a further 1.8 million children.
- Jeremy’s second film, the award-winning feature-length documentary The Day After Peace, documents this incredible journey and as a result, two new Peace One Day Education Resources have been created to accompany the film. Both resources are now available to instantly view online!
- The POD Citizenship Resource 3rd Edition, Recommended for Key Stages 3 & 4
- The POD U.S.A. Education Resource, Recommended for Grades 6 -12
- POD Education Resources have been created with special reference to the education system in which they will be used. The resources contain two brand new lesson plans on the ‘Influence of Celebrity’ and ‘Working with Corporations’, making a total of 19 student-centred lesson plans. Also included are Peace Day Projects, Cross-curricular Links and a selection of new media such as video footage from The Day After Peace and messages of support.
