ACAT(UK) was formed in 1984 by the then British Council of Churches, with the active support of Amnesty International. ACAT is affiliated to the Inteernational Federation of Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture (FiACAT) in Paris, and is a Body in Association with Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. ACAT’s aim is to work, as Christians, for the abolition of torture worldwide. We seek to increase awareness in the Churches and among christians of the widespread and evil use of torture and the need, for reasons of Christian faith, to campaign for its abolition.

FI.ACAT – the International Federation of ACAT: FI.ACAT – the International Federation of ACAT (Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture) – is one of the six members of CINAT, the recently formed Coalition of International NGOs Against Torture, which also includes Amnesty International, FIDH – IFHR (the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues), IRCT (International Rehabilitation Council for Torture victims), OMCT (World Organisation Against Torture) and APT (Association for the Prevention of Torture).

The Global Health Council is the world’s largest membership alliance dedicated to saving lives by improving health throughout the world. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, providing assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. Founded in 1919, the International Federation comprises 185 member Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, a Secretariat in Geneva and more than 60 delegations strategically located to support activities around the world. There are more societies in formation. The Red Crescent is used in place of the Red Cross in many Islamic countries. The Federation’s mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity. Vulnerable people are those who are at greatest risk from situations that threaten their survival, or their capacity to live with an acceptable level of social and economic security and human dignity. Often, these are victims of natural disasters, poverty brought about by socio-economic crises, refugees, and victims of health emergencies. (Read the big rest on WHO WE ARE). The Africa Women’s Initiative AWI is a joint effort by the American Red Cross and African Red Cross and Red Crescent societies to reduce the high rate of maternal and child mortality in Africa. AWI is a five-year, integrated, community-based health education and advocacy program with a gender component. Spanning from July 2001 – July 2006, the program aims to recruit and train a large number of volunteers who will educate women about health issues. Women are the primary caretakers of children, extended families, the sick and the elderly of their communities. Women spend many hours a day in search of clean water, firewood and food, while bearing the greatest burden of poverty, disease, water/food insecurity and conflict. Gender inequality exacerbates the vulnerability of women in all areas by reducing their decision-making power at the family and community level. For women to be effective in their contribution to development and child-rearing, it is important that the health and development problems affecting them be addressed.

Goal: To save the lives of women and children in Africa
