NEPAD New Partnership for Africa's Development

Linked with Ravi Kanbur – Ghana & England.

The New Partnership for Africa’s Development NEPAD is a VISION and STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK FOR AFRICA’s RENEWAL … The NEPAD strategic framework document arises from a mandate given to the five initiating Heads of State (Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa) by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to develop an integrated socio-economic development framework for Africa. The 37th Summit of the OAU in July 2001 formally adopted the strategic framework document.

Link: NEPAD is an economic development programme of the African Union. The NEPAD was adopted at the 37th session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in July 2001 in Lusaka, Zambia. NEPAD has met with opposition from many African NGOs who see it as a tool for strengthening Western domination over Africa. Origins and function, Structures, Meetings, Programs, Criticism of NEPAD etc, see on wikipedia.

Sunflower Association SMS

Linked with Asha Lata Baidya – Bangladesh.

Sunflower is an association of motivated Bangladeshi citizens, working towards the empowerment of 145,000 poor and oppressed people in 750 of the poorest villages in the country. Sunflower helps women and their families understand their situations and take positive steps to raise themselves out of poverty.

As a young girl growing up in rural Bangladesh, Asha Lata could see that people’s lives were miserable and deprived because of poverty. She could also see inequality – that the accepted norms in society favoured men, and oppressed women.

While still a school girl she became an activist, fighting poverty and advocating equality for womenfolk.

In 1980 she started working as a voluntary social worker in four of the poorest villages of her home district, Kotwalipara. This grew in to Sunflower.

Sunflower is a 100% indigenous non-government organisation (NGO). Our constitution and rules are laid out in our Charter, which was registered with the Bangladesh Government Department of Social Welfare on 11th January 1983 (Registration Number F-0237). Sunflower is also registered with the NGO Affairs Bureau, which falls under the Prime Minister’s Office (Registration Number 231 dated 30th August 1987).

Our name draws upon the symbolism of both the sun and the sunflower as providing physical and spiritual strength, sustenance and energy for all of humanity, especially the poor. Our motto is EDUCATION, HONESTY and UNITY. We are a humanitarian, non sectarian, democratic community based organisation. Our beneficiary groups and our workers include Muslims, Hindus and Christians. (full text).

The G8-Platform is a pool of now about 40 organisations, mainly of environmental and development backgrounds. Their joint goal is to prepare mutual activities and events around the G8-summit in June 2007 in Heiligendamm, Germany.

The platform aims to serve as coordination and information base for all summit activities. Work started in January 2006. Since then the platform, which is meeting on a regular basis, has been expanding. Interested organisations are welcome to join.

Several teams and groups have evolved from the meetings organising cultural events, the rally, the alternative summit, action days and camps. As the platform’s contribution we offer
a series of conferences dealing with important issues around the G8. (full text).

Afghan Links, The website to complement the Afghanlinks-Newsletter.

The Afghan Links News Letter is a spin-off from the British and Irish Agencies Afghanistan Group (BAAG) Bulletin that I created after September 11th in response to a need for up to the minute information. For the first few months it was issued daily then became a weekly e-bulletin which is still being published for BAAG Members.

During a secondment from BAAG to ACBAR – the Kabul based Agency Coordinating Body for Afghan Relief – I trained staff there to produce their own local version of a bulletin which is still going strong. Please refer to Agency Coordinating Body For Afghan Relief.
