  • 1. To support and empower those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault;
  • 2. To develop a community where there is no acceptance of or tolerance for either.

The agency provides services to all who identify themselves as victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, sexual preference, religion, age or disabilities. Our services include 24 hour emergency hotline and shelter, Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Response Teams, individual counseling (in both Spanish and English), support groups, youth programs for children and teens, support for significant others, transitional housing, case management, outreach program, legal advocacy, safety planning, information and referrals, and community education. Mahila Samakhya was launched as a pilot project in Karnataka, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh in 1989 with Dutch assistance. The project was extended to Andhra Pradesh at the end of 1992 and in two districts in Kerala in 1998. Mahila Samakhya: Pursuant to the objectives of the NPE, 1986, the Mahila Samakhya Scheme was started in 1989 to translate the goals enshrined in the NPE into a concrete programme for the education and empowerment of women in rural areas particularly those from socially and economically marginalized groups.

Mission: The mission of the Women of Color Network (WOCN) is to provide and enhance leadership capacity and resources that promote the activities of women of color advocates and activists within the Sovereign Nations, the United States and U.S. Territories to address the elimination of violence against women and families.

History: In 1997, a group of women of color from across the country gathered to establish an entity to address the unique challenges facing women of color advocates and activists within the violence against women movement.
