Named in english on different sites, as:

  • – « In 1990, she (Jacqueline Pitanguy, Brazil) founded CEPIA – Cidadania Estudo Pesquisa Informação Ação – a nongovernmental organization based in Rio de Janeiro, and has served as its director since then. CEPIA conducts research on gender relations and advocacy work mainly on violence against women, access to justice, and reproductive health. Since 1997 CEPIA has been the co-secretariat of the Civil Society Forum in the Americas, which aims to strengthen civil society, building common strategies among NGOs with different agendas … (source watch).
  • – Jacqueline Pitanguy says in an interview on CEPIA: … Cepia was one of the first NGOs to advocate for the establishment of centers to work with female victims of sexual abuse. We have been working since 1993 to build such centers and ensure that they are functioning properly. Today, they are a reality. One of our main accomplishments has been the creation of an intersection between the areas of violence and health by establishing bridges between the professionals in these sectors that do not usually communicate with each other. We have trained physicians, nurses, and health professionals working in emergency hospitals of Rio de Janeiro to give the initial care, such as immediately providing emergency contraception to female victims of sexual violence instead of referring them to maternal hospitals as they used to do. Today, Rio’s big emergency public hospitals have trained staff and posted signs made by Cepia and the Municipal Department of Health, indicating what should be done in such cases. We have also been working on the other side of the issues by training the police. Since 1996, Cepia has also been coordinating a course for medical students during which the students debate issues such as human rights, gender equality, and race discrimination. We also hold yearly workshops called the « International Program of Women’s Human Rights » to train men and women working in the fields of health and security … (full interview text).

And on their website in portugese: Nossa Missao: A Cepia é uma organização não governamental, sem fins lucrativos, voltada para a execução de projetos que contribuam para a ampliação e efetivação dos direitos humanos e o fortalecimento da cidadania especialmente dos grupos que, na história de nosso país, vêm sendo tradicionalmente excluídos de seu exercício.

The David Suzuki Foundation

Solutions are in our Nature

Linked with David Takayoshi Suzuki – Canada.

Since 1990, the David Suzuki Foundation has worked to find ways for society to live in balance with the natural world that sustains us. About 2/2:

  • Sustainability: Given our rich natural assets and the strong environmental values, Canada should be a world leader in sustainability. However, in a recent study comparing the environmental performance of Canada to other developed countries, we finished 29th out of 30. The Foundation’s report, Sustainability within a Generation, is a map to put Canada on the path to sustainability by the year 2030. To achieve this goal we work with different levels of government, business leaders, academics and the public to ensure that Canada adopts policies that reward activities that reduce waste and pollution, conserve energy and resources and protect our natural capital while maintaining our quality of life.
  • Oceans and Sustainable Fishing: Without water, life on Earth is not possible. And when our water systems are unhealthy, human beings suffer. Oceans, seas, lakes and rivers are our lifelines, providing us with food, recreation and great beauty. But overfishing, pollution and habitat loss are weakening these aquatic ecosystems. Staff biologists and researchers working on our oceans program focus on habitat conservation, fisheries management and sustainable aquaculture to conserve our precious water resources for future generations.
  • Climate Change and Clean Energy: Meeting humanity’s energy needs without dangerously interfering with the global climate system is one of the great challenges of the 21st century. For the sake of future generations, it is a challenge we must meet. Our climate change and clean energy program promotes sustainable solutions to our energy needs, from renewable sources like wind and solar power, to energy efficiency and improved public transportation. Adopting these solutions will help clean our air, improve our health, slow global warming and boost our economy.
  • Nature Challenge: After the Foundation researched the 10 most effective action individuals can take to protect nature, we wanted to put our findings into action. We invite Canadians to join David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge by visiting our website to learn about the 10 most effective actions that will help to protect nature. The Nature Challenge helps individuals make sustainable decisions about our homes, the food we eat, and how we get around cities. Sign up today!
