Founded in 1974, the Transnational Institute (TNI) is an international network of activist-scholars committed to critical analyses of the global problems of today and tomorrow, with a view to providing intellectual support to those movements concerned to steer the world in a democratic, equitable and environmentally sustainable direction. In the spirit of public scholarship, and aligned to no political party, TNI seeks to create and promote international co-operation in analysing and finding possible solutions to such global problems as militarism and conflict, poverty and marginalisation, social injustice and environmental degradation. As an economist, I do something very unusual: I treat money seriously. Though this is hard for non-economists to believe, economists have it schooled into them that “money doesn’t matter” –that it is just a “veil over barter”, there to make it easier to swap commodities than it would be if you actually had to find someone who had what you wanted, and wanted to sell what you wanted to buy … (about 1/2).

a vision: Provide the exploited children of India with a safe place where they will be housed and fed while they receive an education to prepare them for a life outside the prison of poverty. Beginning in Nandwan in the Kolhapur District of Maharastra where 60,000 children live in extreme poverty, the Institute has purchased five acres of land for the first project: THE GANDHI MEMORIAL SCHOOL.
