About / APWLD’s Believes:

  • The concept of law includes the legal system as well as the customary practices;
  • Law plays a critical role as it can promote or inhibit women’s access to resources as well as their participation in development processes;
  • Legally sanctioned hierarchical gender structures, production modes and socio-cultural relations need to be seriously addressed by all stakeholders. New social structures require new legal instruments;
  • Knowledge of the law, legal processes and one’s rights is a process of empowerment.

Promotion of Rural Initiatives and Development Enterprises Tanzania PRIDE

Linked with Asha-Rose Migiro – Tanzania, and with HONOR YOUR PROMISE CRY THE ONDOA UMASKINI CAMPAIGN.

MDG-Campaign: By 2005 there were 950,000 children under the age of 18 years who had been orphaned by HIV/AIDS and another 1,500,000 who were destitute. AIDS is responsible for leaving vast numbers of children across Tanzania without one or both parents. The larger proportion of orphans have lost their parents to AIDS than to any other cause of death – meaning that, were it not for the AIDS epidemic, these children would not have been orphaned. The age of orphans is fairly consistent across all regions in Tanzania. Surveys undertaken by the Ondoa Umaskini campaign suggest that about 15% of orphans are 0-4 years old, 35% are 5-9 years old, and 50% are 10-14 years old. This has made the family structures fail to cope, thus the efforts by the Ondoa Umaskini campaign coming in to support the orphans. This is due to the fact that traditional safety nets are unraveling as more young adults die of AIDS related illnesses. (full text).

The Nippon Foundation

A Brief Overview of The Nippon Foundation: The Nippon Foundation was founded in 1962 as an organization that concerned itself primarily with the maritime industry. Since then, however, our sphere of activity has expanded inland from the oceans to the point where now it encompasses most of the globe. The fruits of our labor can be found from sub-Sahelian Africa, to the Malacca-Singapore Straits and the rain forests of South America. In fact, our efforts can be seen just about anywhere on earth where members of the human race live and dream. To us, this work is the obligation, and the joy, of being human. (full text).

About: From the Chairman – When The Nippon Foundation was established some forty years ago, the statement, ‘The world is one family: All mankind are brothers and sisters,’ may not have made much sense to many people. At the time, the world was far from being one family. Instead, it was in a precarious position where the slightest provocation by the Super Powers could lead to an eruption of war. Fear, not hope, dominated the world. But it was during this time of tension and despair that the late Ryoichi Sasakawa, my father and the founder of our Foundation, dreamed of working for a better world.
