About: ISSER was established by the University of Ghana in 1962 as the Institute of Statistics, to provide a programme of teaching and research in statistics, with particular reference to the methodology, collection and analysis of official statistics. It was also to advise interested bodies on statistical design, analysis and computer programming. A UN Statistical Training Centre, also established in 1962 to run middle-level Statistical Training Programmes for Public Servants in Africa, was brought under the auspices of the Institute in 1966. It was later realised that expanding the scope of the Institute to include fundamental and applied research in the social sciences, to establish the basic data needed for effective development and modernisation, would be beneficial to the nation as a whole. It is in line with this vision that the Institute was converted, in 1969, into the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER). The United Nations continued its support of statistical training until 1972 when ISSER fully took over … (full text).

Development Research Centre DRC – Migration, Globalization and Poverty

The Development Research Centre DRC on Migration, Globalisation and Poverty was established in June 2003, in recognition of the complex relationship between migration and poverty. The DRC examines migration flows in which poor people themselves are most represented and how migration impacts variously on their livelihoods, rights and levels of social protection.

About the DRC: Introduction: Attitudes to migration are shifting. Seen in the past as a failure of development, there is increasing recognition that in certain circumstances, migration can contribute to development and the alleviation of poverty. However, it also involves risks and costs which may be borne disproportionately by poor people, and it may widen inequality > Conceptual Background to the DRC.

Global Alternatives

Linked with Roger Burbach – USA.

Global Alternatives is dedicated to discussing the realities and challenges we face in the age of globalization. Due to the dominance of international corporate interests and the collusion of political elites, much of the world’s populace lives in misery, alienation and conflict while the planet earth is ravaged by imperial wars and an ecological crisis.

This difficult age makes it imperative to discuss alternative approaches, strategies, and visions. In the Americas there is a popular upsurge taking place against the established order. It is erupting on many fronts, assuming diverse political and social forms, providing hope and inspiration for the world at large.

By posting special studies and reports, and by promoting dialogue and research, Global Alternatives intends to contribute to an understanding of the new politics shaking the Americas and to participate in the shaping of an egalitarian and democratic world rooted in the globe’s diverse cultures, societies and alternative economic experiences.

call to conscience

Homepage: We are veterans of the United States armed forces. We stand with the majority of humanity, including millions in our own country, in opposition to the United States’ all out war on Iraq. We span many wars and eras, have many political views and we all agree that this war is wrong. Many of us believed serving in the military was our duty, and our job was to defend this country. Our experiences in the military caused us to question much of what we were taught. Now we see our REAL duty is to encourage you as members of the U.S. armed forces to find out what you are being sent to fight and die for and what the consequences of your actions will be for humanity. We call upon you, the active duty and reservists, to follow your conscience and do the right thing.
In the last Gulf War, as troops, we were ordered to murder from a safe distance. We destroyed much of Iraq from the air, killing hundreds of thousands, including civilians. We remember the road to Basra — the Highway of Death — where we were ordered to kill fleeing Iraqis. We bulldozed trenches, burying people alive. The use of depleted uranium weapons left the battlefields radioactive. Massive use of pesticides, experimental drugs, burning chemical weapons depots and oil fires combined to create a toxic cocktail affecting both the Iraqi people and Gulf War veterans today. One in four Gulf War veterans is disabled … (full text).

About: From The Wilderness is about the publication of documented truth and the letting go of fear through education.

FEAR happens when we really don’t understand something and when we project, either consciously or subconsciously, into the future. The only real moment is NOW. We become FEARFUL of the unknown and of the things that we don’t want to face. When we don’t face problems NOW we guarantee that they will be worse – LATER.

Carl Jung wrote: « The foundation of all mental illness is the unwillingness to experience legitimate suffering. »

The best way to stop living in fear is to educate oneself…arm the mind, so to speak. The most spiritual way to deal with fear is to approach it rather than run from it. It is from this commitment that true progress is made and that solutions unseen become solutions made real.

We provide you with well-researched data and material presented in various formats. We DO NOT operate from any fixed ideological, political or economic viewpoint. We present the data — what you do with it is up to you.

“These people mainly did not want to hear about women’s equality to man and children’s rights,” says, Enaney Kibret, a member of the community engaged in guiding visitors around the community. “They are also upset because we work everyday regardless of holiday and Sundays, which they don’t because of their faith. But, our faith is based on working hard for the betterment of our lives and supporting people who deserve our help,” she says. (full text).

Awra Amba is an Ethiopian community comprises about 400 people residing together 62 kilometres away from Bahir Dar on the way to Debretabor … In the 1980s, Nuru launched the egalitarian society he dreamed of with 19 other people who adopted his vision. Human Rights here and now: Simply put, human rights education is all learning that develops the knowledge, skills, and values of human rights.

The United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education (1995-2004) has defined Human Rights Education as « training, dissemination, and information efforts aimed at the building of a universal culture of human rights through the imparting of knowledge and skills and the molding of attitudes which are directed to:

  • (a) The strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms;
  • (b) The full development of the human personality and the sense of its dignity;
  • (c) The promotion of understanding, respect, gender equality, and friendship among all nations, indigenous peoples and racial, national, ethnic, religious and linguistic groups;
  • (d) The enabling of all persons to participate effectively in a free society;
  • (e) The furtherance of the activities of the United Nations for the Maintenance of Peace. » (Adapted from the Plan of Action of the United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education (1995-2004), paragraph 2).

During this Decade, the UN is urging and supporting all member states to make knowledge about human rights available to everyone through both the formal school system and through popular and adult education.
