MGIMO was founded on October 14, 1944 when the USSR Council of People’s Commissars reorganized the recently created School of International Relations of the Moscow State University named after M.V.Lomonosov into an autonomous institute. 200 students were accepted to MGIMO for the first time in 1944. Since 1946 international students started coming to MGIMO.
Originally MGIMO comprised three schools: International Relations, Economics and Law:
- In 1954 MGIMO was integrated with the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies, one of the oldest Russian institutes, the successor of the Lasarevsky School created in 1815. The Library of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations was greatly enriched as it included the famous Lasarevskaya Library, which had no rivals in Moscow for its stock of oriental studies literature. In 1958 MGIMO incorporated the Institute of Foreign Trade of the USSR Ministry for Foreign Trade; this led to an expansion of the School of Economics that focused on training foreign trade and external economics specialists. In 1969 the International Law and International Journalism Schools were founded.
- In late 1980s – beginning of 1990s, significant social and economic transformations led to major changes in MGIMO structure and education plans. In 1991 a new school of International Business and Business Administration was founded.
- 1994 was a very important year in MGIMO history as the Institute was granted the University status. In the same year, following the decision of the Russian Government on training in governmental and municipal management, the International Institute of Administration was created. The year of 1998 was marked by founding the School of Political Science, which became Russia’s first educational department training political management experts.
- In 2000 the International Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy was established within the framework of MGIMO by the initiative of the Russian leading oil, gas and energy companies. The mission of the Institute is to train senior managers for the promotion of international energy cooperation.
- The European Institute was founded in 2006 within MGIMO as a result of cooperation of the Russian Federation and the European Union on joint actions aimed at organizing education programs on European issues for Russian statesmen.
- Today MGIMO accepts more than a thousand students every year from most Russian regions and more than 50 foreign countries. Our alumni live and work all over the world.
