About: JPRI was founded in 1994 by Chalmers Johnson and Steven C. Clemons to promote public education about Japan, its then growing significance in world affairs, and trans-Pacific international relations. Despite our name, it was never our intent to focus exclusively on Japan, and over the years JPRI has published many articles about China, Korea, southeast Asia, and inner Asia. JPRI is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization and all donations to it are fully tax deductible in the U.S. Our board and officers all serve without pay, and our web site is maintained with the generous assistance of the University of San Francisco’s Center for the Pacific Rim …
