About: At the initiative of UNESCO and with the support of its Director General, Mr Federico Mayor, the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations was established by an agreement concluded on 16 September 1998 between the governments of Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Mongolia and Turkey …
… The Institute will develop its program in accordance with the following goals:
• Contribute to broad scientific and scholarly research in various relevant fields of both natural and social sciences on the knowledge, conservation and restoration of the material and immaterial heritage of nomadic peoples.
• Practical studies, detailed investigations, scientific and technological experimentation aiming at the improvement of living conditions and sustainability of pastoralism for current nomadic populations through which nomadic communities and culture are given access to modern world-wide technological development. The main goal of these practical studies and programs in development and modernization would be to harmonize technological feasibility and economic efficiency with social and cultural acceptability.
• Contribute to a wide and effective improvement of information about nomadic civilizations, their past and present. This could include a wide range of actions, including the participation of IISNC in training young spe cialists in various fields.
• Because of the central role played for centuries by nomadic culture in the life of the Mongolian people and because of the significance of pastoral economy and way of life in present-day Mongolia , this country has been the first and main supporter in creating the IISNC. However, the scope of activity of the Institute is not restricted to Mongolia . The IISNC will endeavor to take due consideration of every nomadic society or culture and elements thereof, both in the past and present . IISNC’s intention is to be open to any type of study and to cover every continent and country.
We earnestly hope that you have found the above announcement relevant to your own interests and activities. We sincerely encourage you to be involved in this completely unique institute dedicated to the remarkable heritage and potential of nomads the world over. The text of the agreement establishing the IISNC is available on request. The official languages are English and Russian and the headquarters are in Ulaanbaatar , Mongolia .
Mongolia has graciously put at the disposal of the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations some premises within the Academy of Sciences . However, it is most important to realize that the Institute will lean heavily on internet and other electronic communication in order to create an efficient and interactive network of academic institutions. One of the first steps will be to create a Web site.
