History: A Brief History of the International Development Evaluation Association (IDEAS). IDEAS was  conceived to help build a community of development evaluators through a professional association that would be: 

  • global
  • voluntary
  • both inclusive and pluralistic
  • responsive to the particular needs of developing and transition countries
  • an advocate for networking, capacity building, and exchange of knowledge
  • led with representative governance
  • proactive in supporting regional and national efforts to promote development evaluation

Proactive support was offered by DFID, DGIS, SDC, World Bank, and UNDP, and after a period of consultation, a meeting was held in London: … (full text History).

Mission, Focus and Strategy:

  • Many international evaluators have recognised that the ‘development’ dimension of evaluation needs to be strengthened significantly if evaluation is to play a key role in renewed development agendas. It is also acknowledged that practitioners from developing or transitional economies should be at the core of these efforts in order to ensure that development evaluation is an effective learning and accountability tool. In view of those developments, the International Development Evaluation Association
  • (IDEAS) was inaugurated in September 2002 to help fill a gap in the international evaluation architecture.
  • The mission of IDEAS is ‘to advance and extend the practice of development evaluation by refining methods, strengthening capacity and expanding ownership’, with a particular focus on developing and transitional economies.
