About: The European Institute of Religious Studies was created by a decree dated 26 June 2002 and signed by Luc Ferry, the Minister of Youth, National Education and Research.
Administratively attached to the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, the Institute constitutes a response to the recommendations in the Debray report to the Minister of Education Jack Lang on « Teaching about religion in secular schools » (2002), namely, to create links between hitherto disparate research centres and to bring pedagogical practice and scientific research closer together.
Backed up by the Religious Studies Department of the EPHE and working together with the various French institutes and diplomatic missions abroad, the IESR is at once the heart of a network and a centre for applied research. Its aim is, in a rigorously secular spirit, to serve as a source of expertise and advice as regards the role and impact of religions.
The IESR seeks to maintain close contact with administrative, economic and political decision-making centres and trade unions, on the one hand, and with centres of scientific research and basic reflection on the regional, national and European levels on the other.
To what end? In order to bring to the attention of a wider audience current work on fundamental historical and textual realities that sheds light on contemporary problems.
Function and Goals – The IESR:
- helps IUFM (teacher training schools) set up basic education programmes (in religious studies) for teachers;
- collaborates on special supplemental education with regional and national inspectors of the National Board of Education, with district boards, district inspectors, and teacher training schools;
- participates in education programmes for the personnel of the relevant government departments (Interior, Foreign Affairs, Culture, Defense, Health);
- organizes public lectures and meetings with its various partners both public and private;
- follows closely publications in religious studies so as to call attention to those most suited for educational use;
- observes and compares the evolution of legislation and customary treatment of religion in the various European countries, so as to ensure better mutual knowledge;
- organizes scientific meetings with comparable institutions in Europe and in the French-speaking world;
- is developing a data bank on research centres dealing with religion, on a national and later on a European level.
