The purpose of the FGM Education and Networking Project is the dissemination on-line and offline of material related to female genital mutilation, otherwise known as female circumcision. About 2/2: … Who is the Director of this Project? The Director of this project is Marianne Sarkis, MA, applied medical anthropologist.
Originally from Lebanon, she became aware of the practice of female genital mutilation and was enraged to hear that some of her Arab sisters, and other women, too, were subjected to this harmful surgery. Upon further research, she discovered that this practice was universal, and she has tried, over the past twelve years, to disseminate information on this issue, and speak to various individuals and at various conferences about what can be done to create awareness resulting in positive change.
What are some upcoming projects?
- We are constantly working on new projects, and seek to constantly update this site to reflect current developments and research on this issue. Some of the future projects include translations of some historical material on FGM from French and Arabic, FGM country reports, case studies from the field, a comprehensive bibliography, and an FGM Asylum Network.
How often is this site updated?
- This site is updated on a regular basis, depending of course on time and new material. Check often on the « What’s New » section to find out about recent additions to the site.
Can I submit articles for inclusion in your WebSite?
- Submissions are always welcomed at this WebSite. Remember, the main focus of this site is the dissemination of information related to FGM. So, if you’ve written an article or a paper for a class, and you’d like to include it here, please send it using the Email Feedback Form. All submissions are subject to review. Editing, if needed, will be done in cooperation with the author and the Director.
Will you feature the articles that I have written on this issue?
- Yes. So far, there are two authors who are featured by the FGM Education and Networking Project. We are always looking for more. If you have written a number of articles, and you’d like to be sponsored by this Project, please send an email using the Email Feedback Form.
Will you host my WebPage if I’m a non-profit organization?
- Absolutely! The more organizations and information, the better. We would be honored to have your site hosted here. Please email the Director using the Email Feedback Form, and propose the idea, and a WebPage will be created for you. You can have as much or as little information as you like on there, and it will be included. Special attention will be paid to retain the original « feel » of the material provided. If you don’t have a lot of material, just send your brochure and some information. The WebPage created will be professionally designed, and contact information will be provided for you. Do you accept donations?
- If you’d like to make a donation, you can use Paypal. Since this project is not yet incorporated, donations are not tax deductible. We appreciate your help. Donations will go towards maintaining the logistics of the website as well as outreach (mailing information, copying information), etc. In addition, on a yearly basis, the budget will be reviewed and any extra money will be sent to an international NGO working to stop FGC.
