Council for a Democratic Iran CDI

The Council for a Democratic Iran seeks to raise global awareness about the absence of democracy and human rights in Iran and to bridge the gap between the people of Iran and the international community.
We believe there is an alternative between military confrontation with the current regime and accommodation. There is another way which will lead to the development of the free and peaceful Iran sought by millions of Iranians inside and outside of the country, and that is by enabling the Iranian people to decide their own future. Our vision for Iran is guided by a commitment to Human Rights and Equality of Opportunity … (full text About /What We Believe).

About CDI: The Council for a Democratic Iran (CDI) was formed in 2008 to raise global awareness about the absence of democracy and human rights in Iran and to bridge the gap between the people of Iran and the international community.

  • We believe there is an alternative between military confrontation with the regime and accommodation. There is another way which will lead to the development of the free and peaceful Iran sought by millions of Iranians inside and outside of the country, and that is by enabling the Iranian people to decide their own future.

Giving voice to the voiceless:

  • The conversation about Iran has become too focused on the activities of this regime, and in particular on the issue of the regime’s nuclear intentions.
  • CDI is committed to broadening the conversation so that the opinions of those living inside Iran are heard around the world. Ordinary Iranians have the same desires and dreams as people everywhere: to live in a country of peace and freedom where their voices matter. CDI will provide a channel between the people of Iran and Western capitals. We will help expose the complexities of Iranian society and history. We want to enable all Iranians to join the discussion about their country’s future.
  • We believe in a modern Iran. An open society where people are free to follow their chosen faith; where political leaders are chosen directly by the people in free and fair elections; where there is freedom of expression; where the rights of minorities and the vulnerable are protected and where Iranian women participate as full members of society.

What do we seek?

  • To broaden the conversation about Iran by providing reliable information about what is going on inside Iran under this regime.
  • To build a broad coalition of different voices by supporting a range of groups both inside and outside Iran who share in our goals. CDI is not a political party and does not seek political power for itself.
  • To rally and energize the youth of Iran and thoughtful Iranian opinion shapers as well as the Iranian diaspora to join the conversation about the country’s future.
  • Iran is an ancient civilization with a rich culture and a proud history. Iranians want to be a part of the global community and not treated as pariahs because of the activities of their government. CDI wants their voices to be heard.

We ask you to join us in this new endeavor.
