Despite an increasingly global and connected network of human rights organizations, strategic and tactical isolation remains a constant challenge to activists across the world.  Confronted with local challenges, groups often resort to “reinventing the wheel” or deploying known tactics that, while familiar, may not offer the best possible solutions.  The creative innovations of one group often remain invisible to others, and these actions therefore fail to enter the collective tool kit of global advocacy … (about 1/2).

a project of The Nation Institute, and a regular antidote to the mainstream media – Linked on our blogs with Nation Institute, and with Investigative Fund.

Tom Engelhardt launched Tomdispatch in November 2001 as an e-mail publication offering commentary and collected articles from the world press. In December 2002, it gained its name, became a project of The Nation Institute, and went online as « a regular antidote to the mainstream media » … (about 1/2).

UK Uncut

There is no alternative: We are told that the only way to reduce the deficit is to cut to public services. This is certainly not the case. There are alternatives, but the government chooses to ignore them, highlighting the fact that the cuts are based on ideology, not necessity:

  • One alternative is to clamp down on tax dodging by corporations and the rich, estimated to cost the state £95bn a year;
  • Another is to make the banks pay for a crisis they created: last year they paid out over £7bn in bonuses and just four banks made £24bn in profit;
  • The tax avoided and evaded in a single year could pay for the £81bn, four-year cuts programme … (full text about 1/2 /The Cuts).

Peace Research and Education Trust PRET

  • The project reclaims the lost voices of the young men, many of whom languished in prison, often in solitary confinement;
  • young men who risked loss of family support, and social ostracism. Some in World War One, despite being condemned to death, refused to put on a uniform or pick up a gun.
