In 1993, Harvard University’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies jointly initiated an effort to enhance Central Asian Studies at the University.  This was a response in part to the increasing importance of the former Soviet Muslim regions on the world scene following the break-up of the Soviet Union … (full text, Introduction).

Focus and Goals of the Program: Central Asia defies any neat definition.  The primary focus of the Program on Central Asia and the Caucasus is on the newly independent, former-Soviet Central Asian republics of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.  However, just as these countries are intimately related to surrounding regions, the Program is intended to be a resource for scholars studying such areas as the Caucasus, the Muslim and Turkic regions of Southern Russia and Western China, and the northern parts of Afghanistan and Iran.

Breaking the Cycle of Humiliation

Linked with Yvonne Ryakiye – Burundi.

We are a global transdisciplinary network and fellowship of concerned academics and practitioners who are dedicated to ending humiliating practices and breaking cycles of humiliation throughout the world. We believe that through this, space is opened for mutual respect and esteem to take root and grow. We suggest that a mindset of cooperation and shared humility is necessary – not a mindset of humiliation – if we wish to build a better world, a world of equal dignity for all.

About 2/2: Today, the influence of partisan interests is so pervasive that public policy debate has become too politicized and is largely confined to a narrow reconsideration of existing policies. In order to fully understand the nature of public issues and possible solutions, the Institute’s program adheres to the highest standards of independent scholarly inquiry. The Institute’s program is pursued to rigorous standards without regard to any political or social biases.

The resulting studies are published and widely distributed as books, articles in The Independent Review, Policy Reports, Working Papers, and other publications. About JPS: The Jean Piaget Society, established in 1970, has an international, interdisciplinary membership of scholars, teachers and researchers interested in exploring the nature of the developmental construction of human knowledge. The Society was named in honor of the Swiss developmentalist, Jean Piaget, who made major theoretical and empirical contributions to our understanding of the origins and evolution of knowledge.

The Society’s aim is to provide an open forum, through symposia, books, our journal, and other publications, for the presentation and discussion of scholarly work on issues related to human knowledge and its development. The Society further encourages the application of advances in the understanding of development to education and other domains.

In 1989, the name of the Society was changed to Jean Piaget Society: Society for the Study of Knowledge and Development.

About: Background: At is forty-eighth session, hosted by the Government of China in Beijing in 1992, the UN ESCAP declared the period 1993 to 2002 as the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons. From 1993 to 2002, annual Campaigns were held in various countries to raise public awareness of, and to mobilize support for, the Decade goals of full participation and equality of people with disabilities. The annual campaigns also provided a platform for the disabled persons as well as non disabled participants from the Asian & Pacific region to network and share experiences, problems and ideas. Much gains have been achieved in creating awareness about the situation of people with disabilities in the Asian and Pacific region. The Osaka Forum, held in Oct 2002, signaled the last of the ten Campaigns. The Regional NGO Network(RNN) which was established for the purpose of organizing the annual conferences, was dissolved after the Osaka Forum.
