Graines de Paix

(grains of peace)

  • les valeurs humaines, force inspiratrice pour la paix;
  • les « réflexes de paix » , outils pour inviter la paix dans l’action;
  • « l’inacceptabilité » de la violence pour soi-même, pour contribuer à la paix.

History: One H.E.A.R.T., is a 501(c)(3), established in 1998 under the umbrella of the University of Utah Health Sciences Center (UUHSC) after Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) division members returned from a visit to the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). This visit sought to address the very high maternal and infant morbidity and mortality rates and took place at the invitation of the Lhasa City Municipal Hospital and the TAR Health Department. Initial efforts were well received and officials invited One H.E.A.R.T. to collaborate with the TAR Health Bureau in an ongoing, advisory capacity … (full text).

Union of International Associations UIA

Union of International Associations (UIA) is the world’s oldest, biggest and most comprehensive source of information on global civil society. Databases and publications cover many aspects of international organizations – their history, organization and meetings, and the problems and methods with which they work [more]. Here the main entry point for all online databases.

The UIA was founded one hundred years ago, in 1907, by Henri La Fontaine (Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 1913), and Paul Otlet, a founding father of what is now called information science. It is a non-profit non-governmental organization registered under Belgian law as an AISBL. It has consultative status with ECOSOC (since 1951) and UNESCO (1952) … (full text).

Women's World

Linked with Meredith Tax – USA.

We have formed the Women’s World Organization for Rights, Literature and Development, or Women’s WORLD, because nowhere on earth are women’s voices given the same respect as men’s. In a few countries, a few women are heard some of the time; in most countries, our words are greeted with polite indifference and mere lip service is paid to our concerns; and, in far too many countries, women who try to have a public voice are met with hatred, contempt, suppression, exile, or death … (about 1/2).

About: … Whether the agency of suppression is the state, the publishing industry, religious authority, or the family, all forms of silencing and exclusion must be seen as censorship. When certain subjects are made taboo to women—subjects like war and peace, religion, or law—this is censorship. When people who write critically about gender arrangements cannot find publishers, this is censorship. When girls are not taught to read and write, this is censorship. Gender-based censorship is a human rights abuse that must be fought. The world cannot afford to use less than half its wisdom.

Women’s WORLD will undertake work in the following areas:

  • We will research, explore, and educate the public about the scope and prevalence of gender-based censorship, and work to have this problem redefined as a human rights abuse that violates the right to free expression of more than half the world’s population;
  • We will defend writers who are attacked because of their views on gender or because they are women who dare to write;
  • We will mount international press campaigns about particular cases and extreme abuses;
  • We will encourage the development of women’s presses and journals, the first line of defense against gender-based censorship, and strive to link them internationally, so they can share views and resources and create a social space for women’s independent political thought.

Women’s WORLD Board of Directors:

  • Officers: Chair: Mariella Sala (Peru), President: Meredith Tax (USA), Vice Chair: Nadezdha Azhgikhina (Russia), Secretary: Joan Ross Frankson (Jamaica), Treasurer: Paula Giddings (USA) .
  • Members of the Board: Ama Ata Aidoo (Ghana), Kristen Booth Glen (USA), Angélica Gorodischer (Argentina), Ritu Menon (India), Micere Githae Mugo (Kenya), Grace Paley (USA), Luisa Passerini/Annamaria Tagliavini (Italy).

AIRLEAP

Association for Integrity and Responsible Leadership in Economics and Associated Professions

Linked with Bernd Senf – Germany.

… AIRLEAP http://www.airleap.org/
is a non-profit organization. We are incorporated in the state of Virginia, in the United States, but our audience, and the relevance of the topics that we address, are worldwide. We are deeply concerned about the issues of integrity and responsible leadership in economics as they relate to economic discourse, economic decision making, and the career development of economists and related professionals. We believe that most economists and related professionals share our concerns, but many are doubtful that anything can be done to improve the state of affairs in economics, which has existed for quite some time … (full text homepage).

Consultative Group to Assist the Poor CGAP

Nearly three billion poor people in developing countries lack access to the basic financial services – such as a small loan or a safe place to save – needed to help them manage their precarious lives. At the core of microfinance is a fundamental belief that access to financial services empowers the poor by reducing their vulnerability and giving them choices. Whether they save or borrow, evidence around the world shows that when poor people have access to financial services, they choose to invest these savings or loans into building a range of assets that will make them less vulnerable. Such assets can be sending their children to school, buying medicines and more nutritious food, fixing a leaky roof, or building income-earning potential by investing in their own enterprises. In essence, access to financial services enables poor people to build their own way out of poverty. (About CGAP 1/2).

PONAL

The Project on new African Literature

Linked with Abdourahman Ali Waberi – Djibouti.

We present exciting new and emergent African literatures, especially those trapped within the ideological, political, economic, and institutional contexts of the Postcolony, and excluded by the canonising mechanisms of the metropolitan academy. This approach will be our tradition. Apart from facilitating critical conversations, we will disseminate, archive, and comment on the works of well-known, emergent and relatively unknown but equally engaging writers of the third generation from the entire continent. Although the site map is self-explanatory, it might be useful to point out that the ‘resources’ icon opens up a photo gallery of literary activities, as well as clips of authors reading excerpts from their work. This, hopefully, will expand to become a formidable online audio library with time. Our ‘programs’ icon prepares the reader for still unfolding subsidiary projects like the Elmina Press, a long term publishing project for making new African and black diasporic literatures as well as scholarly work visible in the metropolis, and for expanding outlets for manuscripts that would otherwise remain buried.
