CANGO.net is a Civil Society Support Initiative. A new program of the United States Agency on International Development USAID for Central Asian NGOs, exactly in Kasakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
David Hoffman, Democracy Adviser in the Office of Democratization and Mass media of USAID’s Regional Office in Central Asia, expressed his wish to give an interview to « Initiative » on USAID’s new program so that more NGOs and other people interested in the development of civil society in Uzbekistan could learn about it. Before answering the questions he said: « USAID’s main task in the Central Asian region is to support the development of strong NGOs here, which would be able to directly, without support from international organizations, contact USAID after the Agency completes its programs and leaves the region. However, it is untimely to speak of this today. NGOs should pass full audit in the traditional understanding of the word. For the time being they cannot do without help from international organizations ».
