About / brief Overview: The AIDS Foundation of South Africa (AFSA), established in 1988, was the first registered AIDS Non-Government Organisation in South Africa.
AFSA acts as an interface between donors and community-based organisations (CBOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working in the HIV and AIDS sector, placing donor funds with strategically selected organisations and providing them with ongoing mentoring, technical support & capacity building. This enables partner organisations to implement relevant and effective interventions to improve the health status and well-being of their communities and target populations.
AFSA believes that the best way to implement such programmes is by working through organisations located and operating in close proximity to target communities and groups, because these are made up of local people who understand and experience the needs and challenges. The assumption that communities have limitless resilience and will be able to cope with the catastrophic effects of the HIV and AIDS epidemic is simply not true. They need support!
- To equip CBOs & NGOs with the necessary resources and support to implement programmes for the effective prevention of HIV and the mitigation of the impact of AIDS;
- To develop the skills base within target CBOs & NGOs to enable them to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate their work effectively;
- To build the organisational capacity of partner organisations for good governance and long-term sustainability.
These objectives are achieved by:
- Providing grants, over a number of years, to selected CBOs & NGOs for programme implementation;
- Building the organisational strength of the target CBOs & NGOs through quarterly monitoring, site visits, and a structured mentoring and capacity building programme.
AFSA’s approach to capacity building for CBOs has often been described as “coaching”, as it allows for a closer, more appropriate level of support to CBOs. AFSA has developed a comprehensive set of tools and operating procedures that cover all aspects of its work with CBOs & NGOs.
