About 2/2: … AfriMAP aims to:
- Produce reports identifying achievements and challenges in complying with international standards relating to human rights, the rule of law and accountable government, and suggesting means to improve performance
- Support and promote the active engagement of civil society organisations as independent monitors of government
- Complement and engage in critical dialogue with the African Union and its monitoring efforts, particularly the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM)
How we work:
- AfriMAP works with African civil society organizations and the Open Society Institute’s African foundations to research and publish reports on themes related to governance in individual African countries. The reports are based on a standardized reporting framework that — like the African Union’s New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) — links respect for human rights and good governance to development that benefits poor people. AfriMAP aims to complement the broad-based APRM reporting process by going into greater depth in specific areas that are critical to the development of democracy and respect for the rule of law in Africa.
- AfriMAP began its research in 2005 in five pilot countries — Senegal, South Africa, Malawi, Mozambique and Ghana — with plans to expand its geographical scope.
- All reports will be finalized through a broad-based consultative process that includes both government and civil society. Each report will include recommendations and case studies, providing a long-term advocacy platform for national civil society organizations. AfriMAP will also draw on this research to work with African and international institutions and development partners to strengthen their own monitoring and capacity-building initiatives. Grantmaking opportunities for the Open Society Institute and others may be identified through the research process.
