Mountain Spirit is a non-governmental and non-profit organization legally registered in Nepal in 1996 and affiliated to the Social Welfare Council (SWC) of Nepal . The main objective of Mountain Spirit is to preserve the environment, culture and identity of mountain regions through the participation of local people in needs-based development activities. It aims to help make the mountains a better place to live, work and visit by improving the quality of life and empowering the local people so that they can make their own decisions and determine their own destiny.
Mountain Spirit focuses on sustainable development where human capacity, sound mountain economies and capable mountain residents are the basic requirements for conserving mountain ecosystems and their culture and ensuring proper development.
Mountain Spirit currently has 26 general members, 20 support members (volunteers) and 3 life members. Most of the members come from mountain communities and feel a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to mountain development. Nearly half of the members are women.
The professional backgrounds of the members range from natural resource management, statistics, socio-economics, gender studies and development studies to journalism. It is the commitment of its members to work for and with the mountain communities that is the source of Mountain Spirit’s strength.
Responding to requests from communities in the mountainous regions of Nepal , Mountain Spirit provides expertise in the areas of environment management, eco-tourism, gender sensitization, social mobilization, participatory planning, high-altitude kitchen gardens, health care, baseline data collection, institutional strengthening and analysis and conflict resolution.
