The Tanzania Association of Non Governmental Organizations TANGO has been in existence since 1988. The organization started with an initial membership of 22 founder organizations. TANGO has over the year continued to attract new members each year.
Like a tree during the fall TANGO has at times experienced “membership fatigue” which is characterized by some members dropping out of active participation and other new members taking up the active participationCurrently TANGO has a membership of total of 620 NGOs, most of which are regional and district networks, that have members in the regions of 50 plus. This makes the TANGO membership by proxy to be around 1500 NGOs.
It is against the above stated background that TANGO is said to be the largest and long-standing voluntary and self-organized national umbrella of Tanzanian NGOs.
TANGO has continued to pursue its initial goals of unifying the NGO sector and creating an enabling environment, by lobbying for a friendly NGO Act.
It is done through practical service delivery in terms of training in NGO Management, Resource mobilization, information packaging and self-marketing, Policy analysis and Advocacy skills development. This is informed by real-time member’s needs and capacity assessment, done through bi-annual regional visits.
TANGO has been actively engaged in and played a lead, role in organizing and coordinating NGOs participation in United Nations and other international regional and sub-regional meeting dialogues and debates on themes of Gender, globalization, Governance, Environment, Democracy, Social Development and the Human Rights approaches to development. TANGO is affiliated to Regional Sub-regional and national initiatives aiming at eradication impoverishment and promoting people’s participation gender equality and equity and people centered development. Among them is SADC Council of NGOs (SADC CNGO) NGO Council for Eastern Africa (NGOCEA) and the Economic Social and Cultural Commission of the Africa Union to Mention a few.
