About: MISSION: The NNIRR is a national organization composed of local coalitions and immigrant, refugee, community, religious, civil rights and labor organizations and activists. It serves as a forum to share information and analysis, to educate communities and the general public, and to develop and coordinate plans of action on important immigrant and refugee issues. We work to promote a just immigration and refugee policy in the United States and to defend and expand the rights of all immigrants and refugees, regardless of immigration status.
The National Network bases its efforts in the principles of equality and justice, and seeks the enfranchisement of all immigrant and refugee communities in the United States through organizing and advocating for their full labor, environmental, civil and human rights. We further recognize the unparalleled change in global political and economic structures which has exacerbated regional, national and international patterns of migration and emphasize the need to build international support and cooperation to strengthen the rights, welfare and safety of migrants and refugees.
NNIRR OVERVIEW
The National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights was established in 1986, bringing together grassroots community, religious, labor, civil rights and legal organizations to help build a social movement in support of the rights of immigrants and refugees. These activists and organizations, led by diverse, immigrant community-based leaders and institutions, had coalesced over a three to four year period as they organized in opposition to proposed restrictive immigration policies and practices. As an alliance of over 250 organizations and activists, the National Network has organized regional and national campaigns and conferences; supported the development of diverse immigrant community leadership, including the development of capacity building resources and training opportunities; spearheaded rallies and marches; initiated communications networks; produced newsletters, reports and educational materials; and established a reputation for articulating clear and progressive positions and analyses.
NNIRR continues to derive its strength from bridging work that is done in local communities and coalitions with that of other groups across the nation – and internationally. We continue to work with a wide range of groups — from labor unions and independent worker associations, to community and student groups, service agencies and their boards, religious-based local groups, and environmental, academic and women’s groups; we take pride in providing a strategic space that is diverse and inclusive.
A recent strategic planning process reaffirmed NNIRR’s core political perspectives and refined the role of the organization. More deliberate program and organizational development planning flowed from the process and are gradually being put into place. In particular, the National Network is giving greater emphasis to the involvement of member organizations that provide critical input and serve as the main vehicle for campaign participation and implementation. The organization has also become more diverse, reflecting the changing demographics of the immigrant population as well as the active leadership of the movement.
The strategic aims guiding our program are:
- To strengthen the capacity of immigrant and refugee communities to participate in the immigrant rights movement;
- To integrate and connect immigrant communities and the immigrant rights movement with global social and economic justice movements;
- To strengthen the leadership and vision of the immigrant rights movement within a human rights perspective;
- To increase member participation, internal leadership and organizational capacity of the National Network.
