Vandenberg Air Force Base, located north of Lompoc and south of Santa Maria on California’s Central Coast, is 155 square miles of pristine sacred land that, for thousands of years, was home to the Chumash tribe of native peoples. In 1941 the U.S. Army appropriated this land and opened a training center. In 1957 it transferred to the U.S. Air Force, one year later it became Vandenberg and home to the 30th Space Wing, its Western Missile Range (Nuclear-capable Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) testing), and Space Launch Complexes (satellite placement into earth’s polar orbit) … (Mission statement 1/2).
