The Economic Justice Network Lesotho [EJNL] is an alliance of diverse independent and voluntary organizations (Non-Governmental Organizations, Community Based Organizations, Trade Unions and their Networks, Faith-Based Organizations, representatives of media which have activities in the field of economic governance etc). It unites civil society in the common pursuit of the right to economic justice for all, with emphasis on advocacy of socio-economic, environmental and cultural rights of all Basotho, SADC, Africa and Global Citizens. About: MISSION: The Mission of the Economic Justice Network Lesotho may be expressed through various means including: organisation, research, support and education & training, the development of international relationships, advocacy of socio-economic, environmental and cultural rights of all Basotho, SADC, African and Global Citizens control and democracy and adherence to, and the advancement of, a living wage and social security for all workers, their families and communities as to advance the interest of Basotho and their organizations by seeking unity of purpose all across and set aside all differences be they political, tribal, religious, racial or otherwise.
AIMS:
- To maintain and safeguard the democratic character and principles of organisations in Lesotho and protect them from hostile forces.
- To develop positive relationships with all local, regional and international organisations and institutions.
- To secure ratification and observance of all relevant conventions and international standards affecting people and their organisations.
- To support national efforts for economic development and efficiency through good workmanship and maximum productivity.
- To secure a legal framework conducive to sound economic distribution of National wealth.
- Raise awareness on how government policies impact on the standard of living for the populace.
- Challenge unpopular government policies and influence positive, pro-poor policy decision making.
- Improve civil society pro-poor policy engagement, formulation and influence including budget formulation, monitoring and expenditure tracking
- Increase civil society awareness and practical linkages with oversight management institutions (Parliament, local authorities, and community service organizations-CSO’s) and how they can contribute to the debate around economic justice.
- Advocate for tax justice: to restore the ability to tax the wealthy beneficiaries of globalisation.
- Prevent the further privatisation and degradation of public services.
- EJNL is campaigning for social change through public debate and education. Public understanding of trade matters is the precondition for international economic justice. The network makes information available through mass media as well as through conferences and seminars, the internet, publications in print, symbolic actions, demonstrations and advocacy. We base our activities on expertise and sound research.
- The network facilitates co-operation, communication and information sharing between its members. Our network organises exchange and policy debates in order to harmonise views and concerns of our members. This process forms the basis for the powerful campaigns for economically just policies.
- The network is run by its member organisations as well as individual supporters. The network functions on the principles of participatory democracy, empowerment, transparency, accountability and equal opportunity.
- EJNL encourages and where necessary supports member organisations and individuals to participate in the decision making.
