Principles Guiding AHRC Programmes:

  • Victims-directed approach must be combined with structural reforms needed to prevent human rights abuse and to promote rights;
  • Protest work will be combined with a community-based approach. In this, building of a support base in church and religious groups will be given priority;
  • UN-directed approach must be combined with regional and country based human rights promotional activities;
  • Human rights promotion must be combined with promotion of democracy and rule of law;
  • The issues of poverty eradication, gender equality, caste, indigenous peoples’ and minorities’ rights must be brought into all programmes. (about AHRC 1/2).

No Peace Without Justice is an international non-governmental organisation born of a campaign of the Transnational Radical Party and is now constituent association and a member of the Senate of the Nonviolent Radical Party Transnational and Transparty, an NGO with General (Category I) consultative status at the United Nations ECOSOC.  NPWJ is also a founding member of the Steering Committee of the NGO Coalition for the International Criminal Court, the Italian civil society partner in the Democracy Assistance Dialogue, the host of the International Campaign for a United Nations Ban on FGM, and acts as the international secretariat of Justice Rapid Response.   • RISK is the Swedish acronym for the national association for ending female genital mutilation (FGM). It is a nongovernmental organization that has no political or religious affiliation.
  • Persons from different countries began coming to Sweden in the 1970s in increasing numbers. Many came with nothing more than their small hand luggage, but everyone came with the whole of his/her culture and tradition.   • The Cut is a short documentary about Mary (14 years old) and Alice (early 20’s) from Kenya. Both are affected by the traditional rite of passage into womanhood: genital cutting.
  • Mary and her community are preparing for her ceremonial cutting.
  • Alice is studying to be a social worker to work against female genital mutilation. As the first in her community to refuse the practice, she has paid a high price for her choice to break with tradition.
  • Alice tells of the different myths she encounters in the community around her, as to why circumcision is practiced. Mary, on the other hand, has no voice. She just goes through the preparations and rituals in silence … (Homepage 1/2).
