Digital Civil Rights in Europe

European Digital Rights was founded in June 2002. Currently 29 privacy and civil rights organisations have EDRI membership. They are based or have offices in 18 different countries in Europe. Members of European Digital Rights have joined forces to defend civil rights in the information society. The need for cooperation among organizations active in Europe is increasing as more regulation regarding the internet, copyright and privacy is originating from European institutions, or from International institutions with strong impact in Europe. No ‘About’, but this text: The Elders – Current government cannot lead Zimbabwe out of humanitarian crisis … The Elders have released a detailed report on the humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe following their recent visit to the region. The report calls on SADC leaders to acknowledge the seriousness of the refugee crisis in the region, stop deportations to Zimbabwe and establish a regional coordination mechanism to address and contain Zimbabwe’s cholera epidemic.

Central and Eastern Europe women’s network for sexual and reproductive health and rights ASTRA

Linked with Wanda Nowicka – Poland, and with Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in EU and non-EU countries.

The human rights of women include their right to have control over and decide freely and responsibly on matters related to their sexuality including sexual and reproductive health, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. Equal relationships between women and men in matters of sexual relations and reproduction, including full respect for the integrity of the person, require mutual respect, consent and shared responsibility for sexual behaviour and its consequences – Platform for Action of Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing, 1995. … A group of Indian and Pakistani intellectuals who met in Delhi during past two days have issued the following statement at the end of the gathering. Joint Statement by Indians and Pakistanis:
We understand and share the anger of the people over the Mumbai attack. We also stress and reiterate the need for those individuals and organizations guilty of the ghastly attack on Mumbai to be named and punished, in a free, fair, impartial investigation and prosecution. Equally we feel the need to eliminate terrorism that has impacted on India recently and the entire region of South Asia and threatens the peaceful co-existence between peoples and countries … (full text ).

At the turn of the century India’s progress seems stalled by the prevalent ambience of fear and terror along with a nostalgia for happier and more secure times.The scale of displacement, the deep divisions, the smouldering hatreds, the continuing politicisation of events-all these are threatening the secular fabric of out society. What is disheartening is that the threat is continuously being reinforced by a Sustained campaign of hatred by the fundamentalist and fascist forces. They have and still are distorting religion to build a fascist regime by spreading misinformation, false propaganda and distrust for each other in the hearts of the common citizens. The question is whether we will remain passive onlookers or take steps to ensure harmony and progress among the people … (full text about 1/2).
