Who we are 2/2: … UK Registered Charity: SERVE Afghanistan is a Christian charity registered in the UK (no.1105086), has been working with Afghan refugees since 1980 in Pakistan and has gradually moved both its project work and its head office into Afghanistan itself. Until September 2001, SERVE’s Head Office was located in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Currently, the Head Office is located in Kabul.

Funding Sources: SERVE Afghanistan’s expatriate staff are all volunteers. SERVE’s funding comes from a combination of private agency donations, government co-funding, trusts, foundations, churches and concerned individuals. Its accounts and books are audited annually by an external chartered accountant. In 2005 SERVE provided full time paid employment to over 200 Afghan nationals, male and female.

On the Ground: SERVE Afghanistan is registered with the governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan and works in cooperation with UN bodies and other local and international relief and development organizations.

About: Naked Punch is an engaged review of contemporary art and thought. Essentially a federal, « non-institutional » project, Naked Punch is the spontaneous collaboration of thinkers and artists residing in different cities of the world. Before being a magazine, a container of material or a « cabinet of objects », it is a shared understanding, a shared feeling of unease, a shared concern, and a shared sensitivity.

A distinguishing feature of Naked Punch is its contemporaneity . The review aims to actively engage with current developments in, broadly, three deeply connected areas.

Human Development Foundation HDF

Convention Statement: We, the participants of this convention on human development, believe that we must take control of our own future and work for an enabling environment for pro-poor and development-friendly public policy. We pledge to continue working for a Pakistan where:

  • Governance of public institutions is transparent and effective; there is austerity in government spending; and wide public participation in national decision-making.
  • Ready access to justice for all is ensured, constitutional supremacy and rule of law is established, and the independence of judiciary and media is respected.
  • Public spending is re-directed to significantly increase investments in education, primary and preventive health care, and grass roots economic development.
  • The culture of dependence on foreign aid and loans is curtailed.
  • Social and economic entrepreneurs are given the space to create a vibrant and just society.

About 2/2: YCAR is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) within York University. ORUs bring together researchers from across the university, including social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and the professional schools, to organize and administer research, conference, and training projects, as well provide public profile for York University research.

YCAR currently administers research and conference activities with total annual project accounts of $500,000, and works with an annual operating budget for centre administration of about $100,000. Financial accounting for York University ORUs is overseen by York University’s research accounting department.
