Program on Central Asia and the Caucasus

Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Harvard University

In 1993, Harvard University’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies jointly initiated an effort to enhance Central Asian Studies at the University.  This was a response in part to the increasing importance of the former Soviet Muslim regions on the world scene following the break-up of the Soviet Union … (full text, Introduction).

Focus and Goals of the Program: Central Asia defies any neat definition.  The primary focus of the Program on Central Asia and the Caucasus is on the newly independent, former-Soviet Central Asian republics of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.  However, just as these countries are intimately related to surrounding regions, the Program is intended to be a resource for scholars studying such areas as the Caucasus, the Muslim and Turkic regions of Southern Russia and Western China, and the northern parts of Afghanistan and Iran.

Linked with Yvonne Ryakiye – Burundi.

We are a global transdisciplinary network and fellowship of concerned academics and practitioners who are dedicated to ending humiliating practices and breaking cycles of humiliation throughout the world. We believe that through this, space is opened for mutual respect and esteem to take root and grow. We suggest that a mindset of cooperation and shared humility is necessary – not a mindset of humiliation – if we wish to build a better world, a world of equal dignity for all.

About 2/2: Today, the influence of partisan interests is so pervasive that public policy debate has become too politicized and is largely confined to a narrow reconsideration of existing policies. The Institute’s program is pursued to rigorous standards without regard to any political or social biases.

The resulting studies are published and widely distributed as books, articles in The Independent Review, Policy Reports, Working Papers, and other publications.
