20 June, 2003 marks the third World Refugee Day. This day is celebrated all around the world with events such as conferences, stand up comedies, concerts and memorial services. The day originally marked Africa Refugee Day.
On 4 December 2000, the General Assembly noted that 2001 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, and that the Organization of African Unity (OAU) had agreed to have International Refugee Day coincide with Africa Refugee Day on 20 June. It, therefore, decided that, as from 2001, 20 June would be celebrated as World Refugee Day (resolution 55/76). (full text).

about: The GDRC is an attempt to consolidate disparate issues, themes and topics into one umbrella to highlight their interconnectedness and interdisciplinary nature. With the focus being more on knowledge transfer and information dissemination, GDRC focuses on the micro scale – at the level of the man-on-the-street, where most of the everyday decisions are taken. GDRC aims at bringing together the disparate resources on a three pronged approach:

  • Research and development at the global level,
  • Education and Training at the regional level,
  • Policy and programme development at the local level.

(texte entier).

About the World Forum of alternatives WFA; The World Forum for Alternatives (WFA) is an international network of research centres and militant intellectuals from the South and the North. Created in 1997 it aims at supporting the convergence process of the social movements, as well as to the development alternatives that are democratic, pluralistic and sustainable, as opposed to neoliberal globalization and all the various forms of discrimination and domination. The WFA considers that the combined action of citizen movements, their demands and the socio-economic and political alternatives that they represent constitute the foundations of a more genuine democracy of the world system and the embryo of a just and sustainable model of society. The WFA sees its own actions as contributing to the processes of the world and regional social forums and the social and political dynamics that they generate. (full text).

The word African means that the church was organized by people of African descent and heritage. It does not mean that the church was founded in Africa, or that it was for persons of African descent only.

The church’s roots are of the family of Methodist churches. Methodism provides an orderly system of rules and regulations and places emphasis on a plain and simple gospel.

Episcopal refers to the form of government under which the church operates. The chief executive and administrative officers of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination are the Bishops of the church.

About (the english Homepage): From the 23rd to the 26th of February of 1998, grassroots movements of all continents met in Geneva to launch a worldwide coordination network of resistance to the global market, a new alliance of struggle and solidarity called Peoples’ Global Action against ‘free’ trade and the WTO PGA. That was the birth of this global tool for communication and coordination for all those who fight the destruction of humanity and the planet by capitalism and build local alternatives to globalisation.

The defining documents of the PGA are its five hallmarks, its organisational principles and its manifesto.

At the conference in Bangalore, India in August 1999 the hallmarks
and the organisational principles were amended to reflect discussions about clarifying differences to right-wing anti-globalizers. A new second hallmark was added. The Hallmarks were changed at the conference in Cochabamba 2001.
