Located in the village of<br \/>\nKuthur, LAFTI serves hundreds of village communities throughout the<br \/>\nNagapattinam and Thiruvarur districts in India&rsquo;s southeastern state of Tamilnadu.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nLAFTI was founded by Krishnammal and her husband Jagannathan in 1981.\u00a0 It has<br \/>\nits roots in Bhoodan (the Land\u00a0 Gift) Movement, created by Acharya Vinoba Bave,<br \/>\nthe spiritual heir of Gandhi and \u00ab\u00a0the first Sathyagrahi\u00a0\u00bb, who for\u00a0 almost 20 years,<br \/>\nadvocated the concept of Gramdan (the Village Community ownership); it involves<br \/>\nlandowners\u00a0 voluntarily surrendering their land for community ownership by<br \/>\nGrama Sabha (Village Community).\u00a0 The significance\u00a0 of this non-violent land<br \/>\nrevolution is still to be recognised but Bhoodan and LAFTI movements have been<br \/>\ninstrumental in distributing 11,000 acres of land to 11,000 landless poor families,<br \/>\nthrough non-violent campaigns for the purchase of land for a reasonable price, or<br \/>\nthe lease of temple or trust land for cultivation by the village\u00a0 community.<\/p>\n<p>LAFTI is committed to raising the social status and acceptability of the Dalit Caste,<br \/>\nso called \u00ab\u00a0the untouchables\u00a0\u00bb.\u00a0 It has negotiated with the government for land<br \/>\nsubsidies, and with the banks for reduced interest loans for the purchase of land.<br \/>\nLAFTI&rsquo;s housing scheme was created during the drought period of 1986-87, initially<br \/>\nas a means\u00a0 of providing alternative employment.\u00a0 Brick and tile making industry<br \/>\nwas set up in 10 centers, and later with\u00a0 government subsidies, single room<br \/>\ntenements were built with the bricks to replace the crumbling straw huts.\u00a0 It has<br \/>\ncreated Women&rsquo;s Rights groups and Youth Forums in many villages.
